Today is Day 20 and the topic is on a life-changing event I once attended. This is something I did not have to think about because it is so surreal and profound, I still can not believe it.
Last year May, I remember coming across an event on Twitter. Novuyo Rosa Tshuma was coming to Oxford University to discuss her book, House of Stone. Given I had just bought the book a few weeks ago, I made sure to work a half-day that day. You can tell from the picture I was tired and had just come from work. I remember overthinking it and trying to talk myself out of it, but my instinct pressured me to go.
I was not sure what to expect, this was my first time going to an event like this. It was raining and quite dreary. I remember seeing Novuyo and the event planners walking to the venue behind me, but I was so nervous, so I crossed the road and walked to the venue. Weird, I know, I can be like that sometimes. I got into the building and started chatting with other attendees. Some had come as far as Birmingham, Coventry and London. It was lovely being in a room full of Zimbabweans.
She read an excerpt from her book, told us how she started writing and was very articulate and warm. I took in each moment and was in awe at seeing a fellow black and Zimbabwean, owning the stage. When the floor was open for questions, I fought every negative bone in me and asked a question. She was so kind as to answer my question and encourage me to go on. She is also a huge Toni Morrison fan, so it was a match made in heaven.
At the end of the even, she called me over and had a chat with me. I even got a chance to have a chance with her aunt and she gave me great advice. She told me to send one of her stories to her and I was flabbergasted when she said my work was great. I have always known I am a good writer, but being called great was a life-changing moment for me. I know I still have a long way to go but her words encouraged me to go bigger.
I thank God He led me to go to that event. Writing is a big part of my life and its literally one thing I am forever thinking about every day! Her words made me believe in myself, even more, I do lose hope at times but she ignited a fire in me that can never be quenched.
So world, I am determined to take over the world. REMEMBER MY NAME.
